Saliva Collection Tubes

Ordering Oragene® Collection Tubes

Contact the corresponding sales representative to order the Oragene OGR-500 saliva collection tubes. All the reps have been made aware of this project and only need to be told that the orders are part of the NEAR study.

Saliva Samples

Sampling Procedure

Before Sampling

Do not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum for 30 minutes before giving your saliva sample.
Do not remove the plastic from the funnel lid or tamper with the lid in any way.
Read all instructions and examine the collection tube.

Sampling Procedure (2-5 minutes)

Clearly label the tube with the sample ID# on the blank white rectangle.
Spit into the funnel until the amount of liquid saliva (not bubbles) reaches the fill line.
Hold the tube upright with one hand. Close the funnel lid with the other hand by firmly pushing the lid until you hear a loud click. The liquid in the lid will be released into the tube to mix with the saliva. Make sure the lid is closed tightly.
Hold the tube upright. Unscrew the funnel from the tube.
Use the small cap to close the tube tightly.
Shake the capped tube for 5 seconds. Discard or recycle the funnel.

Venipuncture Protocol

All blood draws will be performed by a certified phlebotomist following best practices guidelines as outlined by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Shipping & Storage Instructions

Shipping

Prior to shipping your samples, please print and completely fill out (in Word or by hand) the NEAR Sample Collection Manifest, available here. You must include this form with your package!

We recommend that you keep an ongoing log of all the samples you collect. You will determine what information you want to include in your log. For our purposes, we will only need the following:

An ID number which you create and assign. We will process this number into our system and then we will assign a new unique number to the sample, specific to the NEAR Biospecimen Repository.
Sample description (saliva or blood)
Date the sample was collected
Gender of participant (M or F)
Age
Ethnicity
Dementia Status (if available)

Note: We only accept packages Monday-Friday. We are closed on weekends and most US holidays.

Storage

Saliva Samples:

These are stable at a wide range of temperatures (4ºF to 86ºF) once they are mixed with the DNA stabilization buffer liquid, which is already included in each saliva kit tube. Samples can be mailed through any US Postal Service and no special packaging is required.

We recommend that you ship all collected saliva samples to the Kauwe Lab as soon as possible after collection and preferably after every collection event.

Blood Samples:

These should be kept in a refrigerator (4-8°C) prior to shipping. Please ship overnight on ice as soon as possible. We recommend using a specialized overnight courier such as FedEx or UPS. We do not recommend using the United States Postal Service (USPS) for your shipment because of potential delays.

NEAR is a National Institute on Aging-funded project, which seeks to expand treatment and research on Alzheimer's disease and dementia in American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander groups.
